Places You Should Visit: Stratford-Upon-Avon

Have you been to Haworth after my recommendation? Do you need somewhere else to go?

Before the end of 2017, there was always one place I wanted to visit. I knew people who I worked with that worked in that area but never got to visit myself.

As the end of the year hurtled to its end; me and the better half usually have a weekend trip away, just us. So we decided on Stratford-Upon-Avon this time.

Obviously known massively for the birthplace of William Shakespeare, who many of us know from school of course, this is the main focus of the town. The town proudly embraces this fact and that is evident as you walk through the town square. Many of the old buildings are still there, many of them kept by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust; whom sell tickets/tours for people visiting Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Visiting a week before Christmas last week, we picked some dodgy B&B to stop in for the night just outside of town and headed in. At night time with the Christmas lights, the whole place looked absolutely beautiful. With the Christmas market on, the eateries, the shops and the sightseeing, this makes for a great weekend away.

You can book your tickets for the Shakespeare experience on their website, located here. The prices, cheaper online are:

Adult: £20.25
Child: £13.05

This gets you into all five properties which are:

  • Shakespeare’s Birthplace
  • Mary Arden’s Farm
  • Anne Hathaway’s Cottage
  • Shakespeare’s New Place
  • Hall’s Croft

While the tickets do seem a tad expensive, they are valid for a full 12 months with unlimited viewings. So even if you wanted to split the difference with someone else so they could use them at a later date, you’d do well. On the website they also have events throughout the year and of course, why not pick up some sweet merch while you’re at it?

All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the properties, ensuring that our future generations don’t all end up complete idiots.

If you’re looking for something else to do the Visit Stratford-Upon-Avon website has a whole host of other activities on there for you to do too. I for example, spent 2 hours in a comic book shop much to my girlfriends anger!
